Robert The Bruce

Robert the Bruce is also known as Robert I. He was the king of Scots who ruled from 1306 to 1329. He was the one to secure Scottish independence from England after a successful guerrilla war. In June 1314, he saw victory in the Battle of Bannockburn but Edward II refused to give up his reign over Scotland. The people of Scotland then wrote to Pope John XXII to say that the rightful monarch was Robert I.

What Robert The Bruce Really Looked Like

Even though there is no depiction of Robert the Bruce in contemporary works of art, University of Glasgow researchers used casts from a skull they suspected belonged to him. Artists often used their imaginations and word of mouth to make portraits and statues of this historical figure. Face Lab technology was used together with archaeological and legal evidence to create his likeness. The Pope recognized Robert the Bruce to be the king of independent Scotland in 1324, five years before his death.
