Smith exclaimed, “I felt bad. There’s a pregnant lady with a little boy who is down on her luck.” No one would dare think that her instincts were steering her in the totally correct direction. She had seen this beggar standing in the Californian heat, in direct sunlight, as she begged for money. She had witnessed this time and time again.

Smith was not really suspicious until that day. She had kept seeing the same woman on the same spot at the shopping center for two months. Smith thought that the woman just really needed money. Staying out there for a long time, especially under the heat of the sun, would have been extremely difficult for anyone, let alone a pregnant woman! But then, Smith saw something, and she knew she should not stay silent about it.
