David’s legs were wobbly because he had only lately begun to walk. As Haily ties the laces of her boots, she wonders how much further he may have gone. She sprinted out the door and started calling for David right away. The worst-case scenario is that David goes to the playground by himself because of the dangerous crossing.

Then, Haily notices a small head off in the distance and immediately recognizes it as David’s. Her worst nightmare had materialized right before her eyes. She rushes over to him, but he’s already started to cross the space between the two lanes. She rushes as fast as she can, paying little attention to the cars that are passing by. Then, just as she was ready to approach David, disaster struck, and it couldn’t have happened at a worse time. Her son has indeed experienced what she feared would occur…
