Convair XC-99
One of the world’s largest planes is also one of the oldest, which is quite interesting. The Convair XC-99 was designed to carry 100,000 pounds of cargo or 400 fully equipped soldiers on its double cargo decks. The XC-99 was first flown in 1947 and was retired in 1957. It was used by the United States Air Force as a heavy cargo plane. The XC-99 was the world’s largest piston-engined, land-based transport plane ever built.
Antonov An-124
This 226-foot aircraft was built by the Antonov Design Bureau in the 1980s and has since been used in both commercial and military aviation. Over 50 of them were made and used all over the world. The Antonov An-124, a strategic airlift quad-jet, was the world’s heaviest cargo plane for three decades. Although the Antonov AN-225 has surpassed it, it is still one of the world’s heaviest cargo planes.
