It was for a position based in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Her parents grew up there, although they later moved to Oklahoma for their studies and started a family stateside. In the past, Kotb and her two siblings would join their parents on trips to the North African country every now and then.

Obviously, this was not the last broadcasting role that Kotb took on. Over the years, she has worked in different CBS and ABC affiliates in Illinois, Florida, and Mississippi. She later moved to WWL-TV in New Orleans after landing an anchor-reporter position there. For six years, she worked at the network until she got the chance to join the big leagues with NBC.
