This woman uses a coil to wrap around her neck for years and when she finally takes them off, the results are truly unbelievable. What does she look like? Why does she do this in the first place? How do they manage to use them for such a long time? Read them more to see what these neck coils did to her body!
Why They Use It
Anthropologists have come across several reasons why people wear these coils. One of them was to make this tribe’s women look less attractive which served as their protection from slavery. Another reason says the opposite.
Both men and women wear these neck coils in some cultures. In most cases, it is common for women to use them, but men also use them. The coils are often seen as beauty symbols. Your neck will appear longer than normal after wearing them. This was not because your neck was stretched, but because it will push your collarbone down.
They believed that using the coils and stretching their neck would make them look more attractive. In other words, slender necks are more appealing and using these things could accomplish that. This kind of body modification is apparently special within the tribe.
The Dangers And Risks
Naturally, people are concerned about the safety of doing such kinds of practice. If this is the first time you’ve heard of this, you’d think this might look dangerous. But rest assured, this is a safe practice because it doesn’t really stretch the neck.
Using these coils push the collar bone down and compress the ribs. This could be risky as this becomes longer to use. The Kayan women, who also use this practice, said they’re wearing these necklaces because it’s part of their cultural identity already.
Sydney V. Smith, a 28-year-old girl who wants to become a “giraffe woman”, is trying to extend her neck by wearing 11 copper rings over the last three years.
Sydney was inspired by this form of body modification because she was influenced by the Thailand and Burma tribal people. “I have always had a long neck,” said Sydney. “They called me ‘giraffe girl’ in middle school. Then I saw pictures of the long-necked tribes in Thailand and in National Geographic in Burma and I was fascinated by them.”
After being inspired by the pictures of the long-necked tribes in Thailand and Burma, she decided to try it by cutting the coat hangers and wrapping them around her neck while she was asleep. Even her parents think this is absolutely insane, but she’s always determined to do it because she always hoped that this kind of practice would motivate her to make her neck longer.
Sydney’s neck was longer than other people but not in a freaky way. She’s trying to reconsider whether she really wanted to wear the rings and be called the “long neck girl.” But after some time thinking about it, she realized that she was already attached to the rings.
Slow And Steady
Even if Sydney is not a member of the Kayan tribe, she has chosen to do this on her own. Unfortunately, this seems harder for her since she began this practice during her maturation period.
Sydney genuinely liked using the coils because she likes to exert pressure on her neck and shoulders. She was searching for comfort and excitement, and this was where to look. In 2011, she started wearing a tight-fitting copper necklace that suits her needs
Adjusting To The Rings
At her present age, her body doesn’t seem to grow anymore. She decided to do this slowly, and she added more rings when she got used to it. After slowly taking this move, she had 10 rings around her neck!
Sydney was shy of showing off her neck rings to others. One time she lived in Maryland, she wore heavy turtleneck sweaters just to cover them up. She also worked behind the scenes to prevent any unnecessary attention.
Her rings were made by her friend. They also soldered around her neck, but this features a special screw so it can be removed in case of medical emergencies. Yet she wants them to be permanently attached to her.
Sydney says it was done safely during the process of using the rings around her neck. But she was burned a bit, too. She thinks her neck is about 10-11 inches long right now and she’s grateful for the rings she used!
A Worldwide Sensation
You can say things get more serious as Ripley’s Believe It Or Not features you in their comic books. They feature the most interesting and weird stories you couldn’t imagine, for you guys who don’t know the show.
In The Media
After hearing her story, it didn’t take long before it spread. It’s quite amazing that it was a really unique thing she chose to do, and not something people would do simply because it’s part of their culture. That’s why it attracted the attention of the media.
A Comic Book Character
Not a lot of people can claim they have an inspired comic book hero. We’re not sure if Sydney has a superpower but if she really had to, we bet she could stand in for Elastigirl or Plastic Man. She certainly caught a lot of attention, at any rate!
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see what she meant by a “Progress” caption on this photo. The coils have grown from the first few days and this is now changing her body.
The coils on her neck end up being so heavy that Sydney had no choice but to take them off. She had already coiled 15 rings around her neck at the time, and weighed 5 pounds!
Not Worth It
We know this may not sound intense. But the truth is when you wear it 24/7, this really is tiring. Which it may sound like torture to others.
Dr. Jonathan Nissanoff, an orthopedic surgeon from Southern California, said he did not encourage anyone to do these activities because this could severely damage the neck’s nerves. He added that her age is already mature, and doing so will actually stretch her skin but not her neck.
Not Giving Up
This does not stop Sydney from doing it despite these warnings. Even after hearing the warning from the doctors, she considered adding the 12th Ring. She also dreamed of making money for her looks. “I want to work as a specialty model but it wasn’t my original intention to manipulate myself,” she said. “It seems to be my calling, though”
Someday the coils would damage her body and she will have no choice but to take them off. Sydney’s health came first, so she’s not going to endanger her safety so her life just because of the ring experiment.
They Dominated Her Life
Sydney explained the reason why she takes the uncomfortable coils off her neck during one of the most recent interviews she had. She said that “I could not work properly as a long neck woman in the United States of America with fifteen rings around my neck.”
Her Life Changed
We know that keeping the tight coils wrapped around her neck for a long period of time was difficult for her! She might notice some things she’d taken for granted before.
All About The Rings
People may in some way feel intrigued and curious about the accessories. Five years later, however, she started getting tired of answering their questions. The rings have also left her feeling isolated.
Where Did Sydney Go
“It was no longer about Sydney but about the rings. I tried to stick my neck out to make it work but after a while, logic kicked in, “she said.
Freedom At Last
After five years of wearing them, she decided it was time for her to take them off. She knew it simply aren’t worth the effort as the coils made her life uncomfortable.
She tried to explain that: “Unless you’re willing to isolate yourself completely and you’re a baby with a trust fund and don’t even have to leave the house, don’t even have to move, then maybe you can pull this off.”
Still The Giraffe Woman
She still sees herself as the “Giraffe Woman,” even though she has already taken off the coil. Although in some ways this changed her appearance, she doesn’t seem to regret what she’d done in the past.
It Took A Toll
Sydney got serious bruises in the region of the collarbone, but it’s not surprising because she used the coils for five years! She seems lucky it was just bruising, even the risk of using them is much greater than a bruise alone.
In A Lot Of Pain
She also said her neck was “very thin, sort of like arms on a toothpick.” A good picture won’t be conjured up by the description itself. At least we know what the consequences of doing so are going to be.
Trying To Recover
Although though she suffered from bruises and pain, the doctors told her that the healing was going better than they expected it would be.
Not The Only One
Recently, she was not the only one who had done such drastic things to enhance their appearance and transform their bodies. Continue reading to see people who went for extreme operations to look like their favorite celebrities.
